Interior Decorators Seek State Licensure

Interior decorators are seeking registration under the Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation.

The group has introduced legislation. The original bill had numerous problems, and another draft has made some improvements.

At a meeting of a House Labor Commerce & Industry Committee subcommittee hearing last week, LLR expressed concerns about this new group licensed by the state.

The architectural community is opposed to registering interior decorators. I have raised questions about professional liability insurance for these designers and how their work, where they sign and seal designs, would affect the engineers’ and architects’ professional liability insurance.

I also question the need and the reasonableness of this group to be licensed. With only a two-year education requirement and having to work within the confines of the engineering and architectural designs, their work does not seem to seriously affect the health, safety and welfare of the public.

The legislation is House Bill 3918. If you are interested in either licensing or opposing its licensure, look at the bill and let me know. Joe Jones at joe@jma-associations.com
