Speaker Harrell Says Legislature Might Consider
Privatizing Registration Boards
At a meeting this week with Speaker Harrell, the executive director of the Certified Accountants asked if the legislature would consider dismantling the Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation (LLR) and allowing registration boards to become independent.
Harrell said he did not see any indication that the legislature would disassemble LLR. There are efficiencies in the system, but he said there may be some registration boards that have lost some features in the umbrella agency. The speaker said the legislature would be interested in concerns individual groups might have on the operation of the agency.
Joe Jones, Executive Director ACEC-SC and SCSPE, asked the Speaker if the legislature would entertain privatizing one or more of the registration boards. Both Harrell and Merrill said the legislature might consider privatizing registration boards.
The issue of privatizing the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors has been informally discussed for years. |
