SC Budget Proviso Moves Closer to Passing to Study Feasibility of the State Funding Professional Liability and Workers Compensation Coverage for Volunteers
A proviso to study the cost of the state’s funding for volunteers’ professional liability and workers’ compensation insurance when professionals have volunteered to provide professional services in and around emergencies was contained in the House Budget that was sent to the Senate this month.
This proviso was adopted by Senator Yancey McGill’s Senate Finance Subcommittee and will be included in the budget that goes before the full Senate Finance Committee.
Professional liability and workers’ compensation coverage are hindrances when professional engineers volunteer to provide professional opinions. This proviso instructs the state to find out the exposure and the cost of that exposure the state would have if it extended this coverage to volunteers who operate under the authority of local Offices of Emergency Management or at the request of state or local governments.
