GOVERNOR APPOINTS SIX SC STATE BOARD OF REGISTRATION FOR PORFESSIONAL ENGINEERS & SURVEYORS MEMBERS In early January, Governor Sanford reappointed all but two of the seated SC State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors members. Mitchell Tibshrany and Gaye Sprague were not reappointed. These appointments were made to give the board continuity as the recent changes to the law required a specific schedule for seats to expire on the board. However, the engineering community was not aware of this unexpected result of the changes enacted last legislative session. ACEC-SC and SCSPE worked hard to get the engineering and surveying law passed with numerous changes affecting the engineering and surveying professions but did not anticipate a block reappointment by the Governor. These reappointments were a result of a letter to the Governor from Jan Simpson, Director of the SC State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors As a result of the reappointments only two new possible Registration Board members may be appointed before 2010. Public member Nancy Cottingham’s seat expires in 2009, but the engineering community does not have responsibility for making recommendations to the Governor for that position. Here are the new expiration dates of the Registration Board members (all positions expire December 31 of the year shown below): The SC Council of Engineering and Surveying Societies (SCCESS) sent the Governor the names of four individual to fill two engineering positions in July to replace the seats held by Mitchell Tibshrany and Gaye Sprague. Those positions have not been filled. If the rotation above is followed the Governor may be expected to appoint one person whose term would expire in 2009 and with the other appointee’s seat expiring in 2010. ACEC-SC and SCSPE are members of SCCESS and recommended members for consideration by the Council.
