Do You Know What a Superdelegate Is? Some political analysts think both the Democratic and/or the Republican presidential candidates actually may be selected by these individuals. Superdelegates are about 20 percent of the party’s delegates; they are not bound by primary, caucus or convention decisions. They are the lawmakers, governors and other party higher ups. Because candidates were chosen by voters well ahead of the convention through the primaries, these superdelegates have not mattered in recent elections. Both the Democratic and Republican line up does not look like it will be settled by the national conventions this summer. If the nominees are not clearly identified, these superdelegates may settle the issue and pick the candidates at the conventions.
