The SC State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers Awards Two Technologists Registration Two engineering technologists who applied for registration received professional engineer status at the Mar. 11 SC State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors meeting. Engineering technologists, Mr. Thomas Gaspaich, PE and Mr. Edmund Weaver, Jr., PE applied for registration as professional engineers under the revised Engineering and Surveying law passed in 2007 and successfully met the requirements. Engineering technologists wishing to become registered engineers must apply to the Registration Board; submit a portfolio of their work demonstrating their work and competence in their disciplines. After the application and portfolio are reviewed by a committee established in the new law, the applicants must then be interviewed by the committee to explain their work experience, projects and convince the committee they are capable of working as registered engineers. Both Mr. Gaspaich and Mr. Weaver applied for registration as electrical engineers. The committee must be composed of three registered engineers in the discipline, a college professor from the discipline and a Registration Board member. The committee for these applicants was Mr. Martin (Marty) Mobley, PE, Mr. Steven Bobo, PE, Mr. John Ray Williams, PE, Dr. Randy Collins, a professor at Clemson University and Mr. Gene Dinkins, PE, PLS, vice chair of the Registration Board. Mr. Weaver was present at the Mar. 11 Registration Board meeting. He thanked the Registration Board for the opportunity to become licensed. He said the process was fair and objective. The interview was objective. Mr. Weaver said the education for technologists and engineers clearly was different, and to substantiate the experience to make sure the individual is capable of being a registered engineer is good. Chair ML Love asked Mr. Weaver if he noted any short falls in the process. Mr. Weaver responded, “No.” The interview was extremely important as was the submission of the portfolio. There was another engineering technologist that applied for registration but was not successful. He may apply for registration one other time. If he is not successful; he cannot apply again.
