2008 Legislative Reception
ACEC-SC and SCSPE, with the help of the American Society of Civil Engineers South Carolina Section held its annual Legislative Reception on Tuesday at the Clarion Town House Hotel in Columbia.

Mark your calendars – February 27, 2008, Columbia. That’s the date and place for the ACEC-SC & SCSPE Winter meeting.

Two Registration Board Members Did Not Seek Reappointment
A story in the January ACEC-SC and SCSPE newsletters said the Governor and re-appointed six of the members of the SC Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors, and Mitchell Tibshrany and Gaye Sprague were not reappointed.

SC House Joins Senate in Introducing Legislation to Direct Money to Highways
House Republican Caucus members introduced legislation this week dedicating money raised by the sales tax on cars to go to the State Highway Fund.

On Engineers’ Week
The Engineers Week coalition comprises more than 75 engineering, professional and technical societies and more than 50 corporations and government agencies. Founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the coalition is dedicated to sustaining and growing a dynamic engineering profession by ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce, increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technical careers among young students and promoting pre-college literacy in math and science.  Among the oldest of America’s professional outreach efforts, the coalition also raises public understanding and appreciation of engineering contributions to society through year-round innovative programming and celebration.

The State of the State Address
As noted by Governor Mark Sanford in the State of the State Jan 16, the workers’ compensation situation is not completely fixed.

Economy Important to Engineers
If you haven’t heard, Washington insiders are predicting a federal gas tax hike is not going to happen.
