SC Budget Proviso Moves Closer to Passing to Study Feasibility of the State Funding Professional Liability and Workers Compensation Coverage for Volunteers
A proviso to study the cost of the state’s funding for volunteers’ professional liability and workers’ compensation insurance when professionals have volunteered to provide professional services in and around emergencies was contained in the House Budget that was sent to the Senate this month.
Fire Sprinkler Legislation in the State Legislature
The South Carolina Legislature is pushing for safer buildings. Both the Senate and the House have bills concerning fire sprinkler systems. S921, S860, and H4470 all deal with fire sprinkler systems.
BP Barber lands Jafza due diligence contract

SC Senate Confirms Wilkerson to Workers Compensation Board and Andrea Roach as its Chair
The SC Senate confirmed Avery Wilkerson's nomination to the Workers' Compensation Commission and Commissioner Andrea Roche was confirmed as Chairman by a voice vote March 27.
URS to Employ 400 Nuclear Professionals in Fort Mill, SC
ACEC-SC member firm, URS, has opened the URS Nuclear Center in Fort Mill as the headquarters for the company’s commercial nuclear energy engineering and construction business.
ACEC-SC Receives Royalty Check
ACEC-SC received its 2008 Member Organization Royalty Distribution check from the ACEC Business Insurance Trust (BIT). This check represents the royalty earned by ACEC-SC for Business and Professional Liability Insurance placed with ACEC’s Program during the 2007 Calendar year.
Controversial Proviso to Study the Validity of Wind and Seismic Residential Building Requirements Remains in 2008-2009 SC Budget Going to the Senate Finance Committee
The Structural Engineers Association of South Carolina and the SC Building Code Council are opposed the a proviso directing the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation to spend $100,000 to contract with Clemson University’s Department of Civil Engineering and The Citadel to establish a research project to determine the validity of wind and seismic residential building requirements for South Carolina.

ACEC-SC’s Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament is next month. This tournament has provided scholarships to rising juniors and seniors at ABET accredited South Carolina Colleges for the last 13 years. This year’s tournament is April 24, 2008 at Crickentree Golf Club in Blythewood, SC.
