June 10 – 13, 2010 SC Engineering Conference Planning Begins
The three organizations supporting the 2009 SC Engineering Conference have joined again this year to put together the 2010 conference.
The American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina, the American Society of Civil Engineers – South Carolina and the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers met this week to iron out the details for the 2010 SC Engineering Conference.
The conference is set for June 10-13 at the Marriott Charleston, 170 Lockwood Boulevard in Charleston, SC. The basic format for the conference is not expected to change at this time. It begins in the afternoon on Thursday, June 10, has a full day of discipline specific programs on Friday, and Saturday is divided between seminars and golf and an awards banquet. Sunday concludes with a farewell breakfast.
However, the three organizations are looking to expand interest among other technical organizations like the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. Hopefully these new technical groups will want to provide programs for professional development hours for their members to offer at the conference.
With the Charleston facility being larger and hopefully the economy turning the corner, ACEC-SC, ASCE-SC and SCSPE envision this second engineering conference to attract more participants and exhibitors for the trade show.
The Conference Committee is going to be putting out a call for papers for those companies and individuals that would like to put on a program at the conference. Be thinking about a program where you or your company are an expert and wish to contribute to the profession’s information base.
Mark your calendars. This conference is the one for all engineers in South Carolina.

ACEC 2009 Fall Conference Offered Many Opportunities Including Two Superb Speakers
Former Mexico President Vincente Fox brought an interesting view of the relationship between his country and the United States, and Mr. David Doody, Flight Operation Lead Engineer for the Cassini Mission fascinated the audience with stories of the unmanned space mission to investigate Saturn and its moons.
Mr. Fox, whose career began as a Coca Cola driver delivering Coke to Mexican businesses, then became President Coca Cola for Mexico and South America. After leaving Coca Cola, he became involved in Mexican politics and was elected President of Mexico in 2000.
One of Mr. Fox’s memorable statements at the conference was when he said, “The United States should be building bridges not fences between our two countries. He is an advocate of reviving the NAFTA agreement with his country saying Mexico is one of the United States’ biggest trading partners.
On the problem with drugs, the former president pointed out Mexico is simply geographically and economically between the largest drug producers – South America and the largest drug user – the United States. He agrees the drug situation is deplorable for his country as well as the United States. He says there are constant killings by the various drug factions in his country that hurt Mexican families, the economy and tourism.
Mr. Doody’s stories of the exploration of Saturn and its moons held the audience’s attention as he told about the Cassini spacecraft that has been orbiting Saturn since July 2004. Some of Saturn’s moons are planet-like in size and structure. He said one of the moons has water and methane in its atmosphere that could point to potential life; however the temperature on the planet is measured in Kelvin and very cold. Other Saturn moons have other activities like a small one that has a geyser that spews like “Old Faithful.”
When asked how long a transmission from the earth to the spacecraft takes, he said “about an hour and fifty minute traveling at the speed of light.” As a follow up he said transmissions to the Voyager spacecraft that is exploring much further out in space take 125 hours one way.
ACEC members attending the conference had the opportunity to attend numerous other sessions.
Several states were recognized for making their ACEC-PAC contribution goals. ACEC-SC had about 45 percent of its goal at the conference.
